We measured the traffic our sites get from AI engines like ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini.

Here’s what we found.

We are getting single to double-digit traffic from AI search per month. Most traffic is from ChatGPT. Some is from Perplexity. The least is from Gemini.

But we should track AI traffic now. It will help us stay ahead of a new trend in search behavior.

You can set up an Explorations report in Google Analytics in 5 minutes to measure AI traffic.

Here are the steps to create this report.

1. Log in to your Google Analytics Account

2. Go to Explore and click on the plus icon to create a new report

3. Add 2 dimensions and 1 metrics to the report

 Dimensions are attributes of the data and metrics are numerical values.

  1. Session default channel group (Dimension)
  2. Session source (Dimension)
  3. Sessions (Metric)

4. Build the report

4.1. Drag ‘Session Source’ under ‘Rows’

4.2. Drag ‘Sessions’ under ‘Values’

4.3. Drag ‘Session default channel group’ under ‘Filters’

4.4. Apply Exactly match to Referral traffic

4.5. Drag Session source as a filter

4.6. Apply the regular expression to filter traffic from the 3 AI chatbot websites
